Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico were the first four countries in the world to eliminate river blindness with Mectizan, freeing more than 450,000 people at risk of infection. But the job is not done in the Americas: 35,000 people remain at risk deep in the Amazon among the indigenous Yanomami communities along the Brazil-Venezuela border. Reaching these communities requires health workers to travel on foot, by river, and by air through remote and often hazardous terrain, yet they remain committed. The continued dedication of country partners, indigenous health agents, PAHO, and the Carter Center’s the Onchocerciasis Elimination Program for the Americas (OEPA) will ensure that Mectizan reaches everyone in need. We are united in our common goal to eliminate river blindness from the Western Hemisphere.
