Abstract:
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect more than 1 billion people worldwide and disproportionately trap some of the world’s most vulnerable and marginalized populations into a cycle of poverty and disease. Although NTDs place a heavy burden on public health, particularly among low- and middle-income countries, progress has been made over the past few decades. Since the London Declaration in 2012, about 31 countries have eliminated at least one NTD. Much of the progress toward the control and elimination of NTDs is due to three factors: (1) Countries have committed to reaching more people with NTD interventions, (2) the pharmaceutical industry has donated billions of treatments for NTDs, and (3) philanthropists have provided generous funding to implement NTD interventions.
