Neglected tropical diseases slowing down Kenya growth

Article, Business Daily, February 7, 2018.

SUMMARY

  • A 2016 study shows the country can save over Sh193bn by 2030 through elimination of trachoma, bilharzia, elephantiasis, and intestinal worms.
  • If untreated, the NTDs such as intestinal worms (also known as soil transmitted helminths), can cause malnutrition leading to anaemia, low immunity, stunted growth, and sub-optimal brain development in children.
  • Government statistics show that in rural areas where the burden of NTDs is high, an estimated 40 (39.2) percent of households rely on non-improved sources of drinking water.
