The last mile is the longest on the road to disease elimination. After years of treatment, testing determines whether infection is still being transmitted. When it is suspected to have been interrupted, post-treatment surveillance begins. This is a rigorous process, but without it ongoing transmission could be missed and infection could return. MDP and its partners are committed to working with eligible countries to eliminate these diseases and ensure that they never come back.
